Below Greyson in John From Cincinnati

So HBO's 'John From Cincinnati' finally arrived to UK tv on the FX channel last Summer. The show was cancelled in the U.S after the first series because of poor reviews and a lot of negative feedback on the internet. The San Francisco Chronicle's tv critic Tim Goodman had written it off after only watching the first three episodes calling it "a total blunder" and "a complete mess."
Other reviewers described it as a truly baffling series about surfing, screwed up families and miracles. But looking over some of the internet tv forums you soon discover that it had quite a following with some groups even campaigning to get a second series made.
Media critics were baffled as to why the creator David Milch abandoned his more successful tv baby 'Deadwood' to concentrate on "this mess."
A common response on several of the tv forums was "Oh I couldn't understand any of it but I loved watching every episode." Perhaps I would fall into that category as I did indeed watch every episode. But what was I to make of it? To me it seemed like a concoction of several U.S tv shows all thrown into one televisual pot. Shows like Six Feet Under, Weeds, The X Files, Desperate Housewives and perhaps The Sopranos. I say the Sopranos because of the two gangster characters called the Hawaiins, played by Dayton Callie and Paul Ben Victor, who had me cracking up laughing with their antics.
The forecourt area outside the front of the Motel buildings was where many moments of high drama took place. With everyone watching each other, creating many comical moments.

But were we perhaps drawn in to the show through the spectacular Greyson Fletcher, a champion skateboarder and professional surfer who played the role of Shaun Yost. He was rightly critisized for his wooden acting. It seemed as though he was given no direction for his part and was perhaps given carte blanche in how he should play his character.
After the show folded Greyson took off with his Dad and moved to Bali for a while, a mecca for surfers. The series was released on dvd last year.

  1. Bad script, wooden acting, sleazy characters....who cares, if Greyson is in it!

  2. Oh you're right there Luke. Although occasionally funny weren't we mostly watching it for the delicious Grayson?

    Cheers.

  3. I kept thinking, They'll pull it all together in the series finale, then I'll understand it. That didn't happen. It was interesting at times, but overall not satisfying.
