OCEAN WONDER TUMBLR

I'm hoping to be back up and blogging soon in time for a
Spring return. So just to break up the long Winter gap I
thought I'd post up something with a Summer feel, something
we need right now with most of Europe covered in a
blanket of snow.
And one tumblr that just might help us through the rest of
our Winter is Ocean Wonder with it's amazing collection of oceanic
images featuring atolls, lagoons and turquoise seas. And I
suspect that most of the images were captured in the jewel
of the globe, The Indian Ocean.
The tumblr like many others is best viewed through it's
history/archive pages.
Below is a video that I just threw in as an extra. It's got that
sexy Hedkandi Latin House vibe. Released in 2009 it's taken
from the unmixed compilation "Louis Vega's Dance Ritual Vol 1."

Ryuichi Comes Of Age!

I'm still in a slight stage of shock having recently found out that Japanese musician
Ryuichi Sakamoto is about to turn the grand age of 60 next month. He first came to
my attention when I first saw him in the Nagisa Oshima film 'Merry Christmas
Mr Lawrence' which was made in 1983. It also starred David Bowie and Tom Conti.
Yet as amazingly beautiful as Sakamoto looked in that film he did later reveal that
acting was not his forte. But he certainly found his niche in music filmscore composing,
winning many awards for his scores including an Academy Award.

Yet when I see up to date images of Ryuichi I can hardly associate them with the beautiful
images of him from the 1980's and 90's. He seems like a completely different person
altogether, looking almost haggard and absent of any vanity. I suppose time will catch
up with us all. But then I should remember that Ryuichi was 31 when he appeared
in that film.

The top picture is of Ryuichi's 1987 album 'Neo Geo' which also features a collaboration
with Iggy Pop. The opening track 'Before Long' is a work of genius, although very short
it's clearly inspired by his interest in classical music, particularly with the likes of Debussy.
It sounds like a simple piece to play on the piano but I keep trying to give it a go. And when
you scour around youtube for Sakamoto compositions you can see what a big influence he
has on budding musicians. The piece they all seem to want to play is his most well known
tune, the theme from Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence which Ryuichi plays in the video below.

For my final Biron posting for now I give you a young bubbly
character called Michael. One might even consider him
to be photographer Biron's muse. He's modeled quite a
few times for the San Franciscan based photographer and
below are just a few images from several photo shoots from
the past couple of years.
Michael 19, resides, works and goes to College in San Francisco
and he's planning on making the big move to the East Coast
next Spring basing himself in New York where he'll continue
with his education while pursuing a modeling career.
Apologies to Michael who was originally told that I'd be posting
up his images a couple of months ago. So here they are,
hope you enjoy them.

Harry in Dreysland

up a tumblr and has added some of his work including this startling image of
model Harry Goodwins. Taken last year for a photo spread featuring Harry of which

Yuzuru Hanyu Shines in Canada Grand Prix

On Sunday Japanese teen skater Yuzuru Hanyu skated
in the performance of his life in The Grand Prix Final in
Canada and yet shockingly he only managed to secure a
4th place win after some outrageous judging.

In a competition that should have seen Diasuke Takahashi
and Yuzuru Hanyu take 1st and 2nd place in the final Free
Program, the judges decided to go with Canada's Patrick
Chan who frankly looked clumsy. His final Free skate
performance was riddled with errors, of which I counted
four. Even in his Short programe he went crashing into the
edge of the rink wall.
Both commentators on Euro Sports Channel Nicky Slater
and Simon Reed were disappointed with his performances.
So how did he pull off this win. Were all the judges Canadian
or did he win by reputation alone?
Apparently Chan made a childish statement to the world's
media prior to the tournament saying that "In an ideal world
I'd like to skate for both Canada and China." But it seems
that he spent the whole weekend repenting and having to
apologize for this statement. He also believed that he feels
unappreciated by Canadians, being of a mixed Asian race.

Perhaps I need to learn all about the finer points in how
skaters are judged, but it does seem odd to me how someone
like Yuzuru Hanyu can perform in an almost faultless
performance, of which even he was shocked as you can
see in the pictures below, and yet Patrick Chan can have
a bad day at the office and still come away with a runaway
11 points win ahead of everyone else.

But Yuzuru is a bit of a disco bunny and he loves his dancing and
on Sunday evening he joined in with all the other top skaters for
a disco gala where we briefly saw him dancing to
The Village People's 'Macho Man.'

Billie's Blues

I'm normally one to reach for the remote as soon as the tv ads come on, but one that caught my attention recently was the Chanel No5 perfume commercial featuring that amazing voice of singing legend Billie Holiday. The song 'I'm A Fool To Want You' must be one of the most haunting songs I've heard in a long time. And even though I still have a CD of her greatest hits, I was never aware that she'd even covered this song.
Recorded for her last album 'Lady In Satin' in 1958 you can hear the pain in her voice. And when you read up about Billie Holiday it's clear that she had more than her fair share of tragedy.
She learned the craft of singing at 14 while working alongside her Mother as a prostitute in a Harlem brothel. Her adult life was ravaged by excessive drink and drug use and it's been said that she had very little luck with relationships with men, often being attracted to violent and abusive partners.
At her height of fame in the 1940's she would earn a thousand dollars a week, most of which she spent on heroin, which along with her heavy drinking eventually killed her at only the young age of 44 in July 1959.

"With few exceptions, every major pop singer in the US during her generation has been touched in some way by her genius. It is Billie Holiday who was, and still remains, the greatest single musical influence on me."

It looks like photographer Biron has once again been out doing a little bit of talent
spotting. And here's a young guy by the name of Blake who he stumbled into at The
Wierd Street Festival, a sexually diverse counterculture gathering held in San Francisco.
These pictures of Blake were only taken last weekend and there's now a collection of 70
images of him in the Biron home Galleries.
And for lovers of tattoos he does seem to be sporting a rather impressive spinal tattoo.
Here's hoping that it wont be too long before Blake returns for another photo shoot.

Biron's Castro Street Fair 2011

In October San Francisco marked the passing of Summer with The 38th Annual
Castro Street Fair, the city's oldest outdoor Arts & Crafts Fair, founded in 1974
by Harvey Milk. Held between Market & 16th Street to Castro & 19th Street the event
attracts local crowds and visitors including colourful trannies, muscleboys and a lot of
party goers out for a good time.
Although not considered as outlandish as The Dore Alley
& Folsom St Fairs it's still a popular event. And as always,
San Francisco's roving photographer Biron was there to
capture the event with a fine gallery of images, a few of
which he sent me to post up here.

Yuzuru Hanyu's Gala Performance

Good to see quite a few new visitors after last weekend's posting on Japanese skater Yuzuru Hanyu
after his sensational Gold winning medal performance in The Cup Of Russia.
After the competition 16 year old Yuzuru took part in the Skating Gala where he danced to Justin Bieber's
Somebody To Love (ear plugs for Neil here I'm afraid). Yuzuru then came back onto the ice for an encore,
all of which can be seen in this video below.

Eyecatching Covers

Here's an eyecatching book cover that stopped me in my tracks when rummaging around
Waterstones book shop after the festivities in Hampstead on Sunday.
Titled Annabel, apparently it's the debut novel written by Kathleen Winter and it was
released earlier on this year. It's a story about a hermaphrodite child born neither a girl
or a boy, and born to a couple who live out in a remote part of Canada in the late 1960's.
The child is brought up as a boy called Wayne, but inside of him is a girl trying to tear
her way out.

The book does seem to get mixed reviews but for a full comprehensive review at

Festive Lights On!

COMEDIAN MICHAEL McINTYRE SWITCHES ON THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Last Sunday saw the switching on of our local Village Christmas Lights in Hampstead
High Street. The event was organized by NW3 Hampstead, a voluntary non profit
organization which aims to improve the amenities, quality and profitability of buisness
in Hampstead, although it's looking like many small independent shops are frankly
struggling with the high rates and demands from the local Council. Among the latest
victims of closure is the ever popular Grocer 'Pure Fruit' a family run buisness that
opened in 1958.
Also gone is my favourite Health shop opposite Hampstead Station. And it seems that
whenever another shop falls because of the extortionate rents and buisness fees, we
seem to end up with yet another mobile phone shop. Many people are now saying that
Hampstead is just turning into just another clone High Street and that it's lost it's charm,
something it once had when the Village was abundant with small shops and buisness's.

This year's celebrity guest was popular comedian and master of trivial observations
Michael McIntyre who switched on the lights. Along with some Carol singers and a
Rock Choir there was a rock group by the name of Mad Dog Bites which featured
John Moss, formerly of Culture Club and former Fleetwood Mac player Bob Weston.
Also laid on were lots of food stalls, some funfair rides and an animals corner with goats,
donkeys and two reindeers. Below are just a few photos from the event.

Yuzuru Hanyu... A Little Prince On Ice

JAPAN'S 16 YEAR OLD SKATER YUZURU HANYU DURING YESTERDAYS SHORT PROGRAM
AT THE GRAND PRIX SERIES IN MOSCOW RUSSIA

With this winter's Figure Skating season in full flow, the Grand Prix Tour has reached
Moscow for The Cup Of Russia. And one skater who's been making waves and getting
noticed is 16 year old Japanese beauty Yuzuru Hanyu.
Sports commentators at the recent Grand Prix Cup Of China were giving rave reviews
for his performance there. And this week he has been performing in Moscow and in his
first short program he managed to come second behind Jeremy Abbott despite a fall
during his opening quad.
And if there's one thing that makes Yuzuru stand out then it must be his gracefulness
not to mention his flamboyance. He could even be compared to the likes of other skaters
like Adam Rippon and Johnny Weir. In fact Yuzuru is such a big fan of Johnny Weir that
they met up this year after an exchange of e-mails. And Johnny Weir even helped design
a skating costume for him.
Last year Weir faced a lot of critisism over issues regarding his personal life and in his
biography book released last January he finally came out as gay.

Yuzuru was personally effected by this years Japan Tsunami when the ice rink near his
hometown of Sendai was badly damaged. Even his home was affected so his family were
forced to stay in one of the many local community centers until it was safe to return to his
home.
But Yuzuru certainly loves his music and he can really up the antics when he performs
in skating galas. This is when the top winning skaters of any given competition are allowed
a little bit of artistic freedom and can let their hair down a bit. And he should be expecting
to perform in tomorrows (Sunday) Skating Gala.
Yuzuru said in a recent interview that he likes listening to J-Pop as well as Taylor Swift
and Lady Gaga.

UPDATE: Saturday 26th Nov 3.30... Yuzuru Hanyu has just won 1st place winning
The Mens Free Event at The Cup Of Russia.

The Cup Of Russia is currently being shown on Eurosport Channel (Sky 410 & 411)
all over this weekend including repeats as well as Sunday's Gala.

Kennedy... 50 Years On

PRESIDENT JOHN F KENNEDY WITH J EDGAR HOOVER AND BOBBY KENNEDY

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of John F Kennedy taking the oath to become The 35th President Of The United States while today is actually the 48th Anniversary of his assasination in Dallas Texas in 1963. And this past weekend the tv channels have been awash with documentaries marking the occasion. Two particular stand out shows were 'The Kennedy Assasination... 24 Hours' After and 'The Kennedy Detail' a documentary where Kennedy's personal Secret Service bodyguards came out and discussed in detail for the very first time what it was like to be guarding The President while reflecting on that fatal day in Dallas. It seems that even though all of those now long retired Agents enjoy annual get together reunions, the subject of the assasination was taboo and was never brought up in any discussions until now. At times they seemed to find it hard to talk about and got quite emotional. It was as if they were finally laying to rest a few ghosts and getting a lot off their chests.

And just as interesting was the other documentary on Sunday night called 'The Kennedy Assasination... 24 hours After' which revealed the chaos and confusion over the following 24 hours after the incident. Oddly enough the two documentaries disputed each other when it came to the buisness of trying to get Kennedy's body released from The Parkland Hospital Dallas after the shooting so that it could be flown back to Washington as soon as possible. Apparently Dallas law states that an autopsy must be carried out before releasing a body, but Kennedy's men were having none of that. So according to the first documentary 'The Kennedy Detail' his former Secret Service Agents said that they haggled and argued with the medical staff and security to take Kennedy away. Eventually The Hospital agreed to their request as long as a Doctor was kept by The President at all times while they flew back to Washington to carry out an autopsy there.

Yet in the second documentary ( Kennedy... 24 Hours After ) there was a huge big fight at The Hospital between The Secret Service Agents and the Hospital Security. Even a gun was pulled out at one time and Kennedy's men were forced to bulldoze their way out of The Hospital to make a dash for Airforce One waiting on the tarmac at The airport. The show also revealed that while all this was going on that Vice President Lyndon Johnson was being kept in the lurch and was apparently the last person to know what was going on and whether The President had actually been killed. But as soon as he found out he was quick to instigate his Innauguration right there on Airforce one which he knew would finally put Bobby Kennedy out of the picture, a man considered as President Kennedy's real right hand man and not Vice President Johnson. It seems that there was no love lost between them.

Earlier this year the BBC ran an evening of shows dedicated to the Kennedy era including a Culture Show Special as well as showing The Kennedy Home Movies. But BBC2's Culture Show was there for one reason only and that was to discuss with a panel of Historians and politicians tv's biggest Kennedy offering of the year which was the controversial tv series 'The Kennedy's', a series that just might have been a little bit too revealing. But I thought it was quite enjoyable. I'm still not sure if it ever did get shown in The U.S. I believe they tried to stop it being shown altogether. Perhaps it got shown eventually on some Cable Channel.
But looking around on Youtube it's interesting watching all the differing opinions. In one interesting video I found, an amateur movie enthusiast filmed the shooting from the opposite side of the 'Grassy Knoll' the side of the road where Abraham Zapruda shot that famous footage from, and just after the point of the shooting his camera lens is suddenly drawn to the area, not of the School Book Depository Building where Lee Harvey Oswald was proported to be, but that his cine camera's zoom was suddenly aimed towards the area around the 'Grassy Knoll.' In fact you can just make out a group of people charging up the slope as though they had seen a possible culprit and that they were giving chase.

THAT VIDEO IS HERE

There does seem to still be so many unanswered questions. For example, if that fatal final shot was was supposed to have been executed from behind the President's limousine then why would his head fall backwards rather than forward. And why would First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy be scrambling onto the boot of the car to retrieve head wound parts that flew onto the rear of the car rather than in front of them.

In one tv documentary from earlier on this year titled 'JFK's Women... The Scandals Revealed' we were told that after yet another secret affair with another woman, The President was let off the hook from a full media expose when Bobby Kennedy the then Attourney General threatened to use powerful anti monopoly legislation to attack the Hearst Corporation. It seemed to work. But then just as the pressmen departed from their meeting with Bobby Kennedy they made a parting threat that they had an even bigger story that would blow the lid right off. And the very next day head of the FBI J. Edgar Hoover informed Bobby Kennedy of of a security investigation into yet another JFK affair.

Her name was Ellen Rometsch a 27 year old party girl and wife of a Seargent in the West German Military Mission in Washington. And that in 1963 an informant told the FBI that she was connected at the highest level to The East German Communist Party.
If the news of this affair had got out it would certainly have ended JFK's chances of a second term. There was even talk of possible Impeachment. So Bobby Kennedy had to act fast and decided to revoke Ellen Rometsch's visa and had her deported back to Germany. And for a while things calmed down. But within just a few weeks the Rometsch Affair was to come back and haunt the last few weeks of the Kennedy Presidency.
In September 1963 a major political scandal broke out involving Bobby Baker a Senior Political Secretary in The Senate. Apparently he was supplying escorts to many of the top Politicians. It was Bobby Baker after all that originally helped set up JFK's first meeting with the East German party girl.
And having been bitter at her deportation she hinted to the press that she'd been involved with someone very high up in Washington referring to them as a 'Prominent New Frontiersman.' And so a woman being investigated by the FBI as a serious security risk was being linked with the Presidency. And fairly soon after there was to be a Senate Committee to investigate the party girl activities of Bobby Baker. And it seemed that had Ellen Rometsch been given immunity to testify at those hearing then it really would have been the end of JFK's Presidency.
So Bobby Kennedy went into action again. He pleaded and begged J. Edgar Hoover to shut down The Senate Enquiry. When Hoover finally did secretly meet up with two of the Senators he told them that he had files that showed highly embarassing links between many Washington politicians and Bobby Baker's party girls and that a full investigation could bring down the walls on everyone. In the end the Senators agreed and Hoover won the day. And it was by his actions he had secured his job as Head of the FBI after recent rumours at the time of his demise. Bobby Kennedy was forced to make sure of that. And on October 31st 1963 Hoover lunched with the greatful President. It was to be their last ever meeting.

But one documentary that sticks in my mind was one shown about 3 years ago. It claimed that JFK was not a very well man despite the youthful image that he portrayed. It claimed that he was riddled with back and groin pain and constantly needed injections to ease the pain. And that on the day of his assasination he was wearing a girdle type body support. And sitting in that Presidential limousine it was somewhat restricting his movements. And lo and behold they were probably right about that because in about three scenes in the recent tv series 'The Kennedy's' he was seen wearing this girdle/body support which I thought at first was some kind of bullet proof vest.
And one observer said in this revealing documentary that after JFK was hit by that first bullet an immediate reaction would have been to have got down low and out of sight. But The President's movements were restricted by his girdle/body support which of course left him totally open and exposed for that final fatal shot.

But as much as Americans are fascinated with our British Royal Family I think we Brits have always been fascinated by The Kennedy's, particularly John F. Kennedy, the first youngest and shortest term President.

I've noticed recently that a couple of normally regular bloggers have vanished recently.
One having not posted up anything for just over a month and the other one for around
18 days. What is strange is that neither blogger has left any explanation for their
temporary absence, and of course they're not answerable to anyone, blogging is just
something to do for fun.
But certain bloggers do have a regular crowd of followers who probably get a bit frustrated
when the blog host vanishes without any sort of explanation or a note to say when they'll
be back again. I remember asking one of these very bloggers last year why he disappeared
for over a month and without any explanation, and he told me later on that he just couldn't
face having to explain to all his readers who at that time were all clamouring for
some kind of explanation in the busy unanswered blogs comments section.

I suppose that even I've been guilty for vanishing for the odd week but not for much more
than that. I guess that visitors here know by now that if I think one of my posts has bombed
or perhaps the comments have dried up then I'm usually out of here and I go and do
something else for a few days.
So I thought I'd try out this little self made gadget which I've put in the side banner which
will keep regular visitors more informed and I'll just put a red dot next to the relevant line
and perhaps with a date as well if it needs it. But I would imagine that for most of the time
in between post you'll probably see the red dot next to 'POSTING SOON.' Of course I
would have liked to have put as another option 'NOTHING FOUND, NOTHING TO
POST UP... ALL INSPIRATION LOST' which of course does actually happen sometimes.

So I'll just give it a try out for a while and see how it goes.

Turning Japanese

I suppose I've always been attracted to the whole thing about Japanese
culture and I suspect that it's also one of the main Asian cultures that
westerners are drawn to. I particularly like those classic Japanese interiors
as seen in the picture above. They always look so sparse, spacey and clean.
You do wonder where they keep everything. And is it possible that those
designs of old actually gave birth to what we might call modern minimalism.
And that minimalism can even spread out into Japanese gardens where plants
are even minimal in some cases.
Looking around one of our London Habitat stores I noticed some Japanese lamps
and snapped a picture of one and decided to make one myself. After all they were
just made of a few bit's of light wood timber and a sheet of rice paper which I bought
in a local art supplies shop. And the end result is in the picture below although I added
the Japanese calligraphy sign on it painted in black. Apparently It's supposed to say
Nippon, or at least thats what I hope it says. It's only about a foot high but I'd like to
eventually make a tall floor standing one, perhaps two and a half feet tall.

In the video below is the beautiful sound of Koto music. Quite therapeutic and relaxing.

It seems that a gathering of fashionistas attended a party in London to celebrate a newly
published book called the J Lindberg Biannual Book in which our model Jonathon can be
seen (top image) in a picture by Carlotta Manaigo.

As well as being a model, Jonathon is a trained ballet dancer and more can be found out

BOOBOO STEWART

Just out now is the new November edition of Glamoholic Magazine. And gracing the cover
is Hollywood all rounder BooBoo Stewart who reveals his future plans and of course his
current role in the new up and coming Twilight saga: Breaking Dawn.
And looking at some of the latest pictures of BooBoo now 17, I cant help noticing quite a physical
change in just two short years.
Could it be something to do with his time spent in the gym pumping iron. Surely no fifteen
year old boy should even be contemplating that especially between the ages of 15 and 17, the
very period when the body is still maturing and growing. Perhaps if others are doing this
then they might be unknowingly advancing the ageing system in order to bulk up and reach
manhood, if somewhat prematurely. Perhaps it's the Hollywood way or perhaps I'm being a
bit over nostalgic for the BooBoo from a year or two ago. Asian boys particularly are normally
noted for staying youthful well into their thirties.

But somehow BooBoo looks fine in the current magazine photos and all captured by Benny Haddad.

I suppose I do have quite a wide taste in music and I'm often puzzled why so many people stick with one genre of music all their lives, never venturing out and looking for new things. Even at School I harboured a secret interest in Jazz and swing, often listening to Sinatra. His time at Capitol Records was a phenomenal period with some of the greatest classics composed by guys like Johnny Mercer and Sammy Cahn. But just a few years ago a friend gave me an Opera cd to try out. It was Verdi's La Traviata. They also advised me to turn up the volume quite loud on the headphones at the big climatic ending. And I wasn't disappointed. It nearly clean blew my head off. My immediate reaction was whoa, what just happened? I soon took up quite an interest in Verdi and started to listen to other works by him. It seems that he composed around 28 Operas including greats like Otello, Aida, Don Carlos, Rigoletto and one of my personal favourites Nabucco, a particularly noisy affair.

In my new musical interest at that time I was inspired to do a painting of the great one having first tried out doing a sketch. The painting (above) took me a whole weekend to paint, working at a very slow pace. It's actually a copy of the famous portrait painted by Giovann Boldini in 1886. It doesn't seem to have photographed too well. Even the flesh tones hardly show up, so the actual painting looks a lot better than the photo above.
But one thing I learned about Verdi was that he was the master of finality. He knew how to finish an Opera if it required a big climatic ending. And for me this 1982 recording of La Traviata (picture below) with the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and Philharmonica conducted by Ricardo Muti is simply the best I've ever heard. Other versions dont come anywhere near it. And looking around youtube showing various stage performances of this Opera can be very disappointing and sometimes even laughable. So a good set of headphones and a high volume at the climax of this great work and you're sure to feel something of the finality. And the only recording that I found of it on the internet was at Grooveshark (below).
Having completed his final Opera Falstaff in 1893 in his early eighties Verdi died in 1901 with a dying wish that his funeral should be carried out as just a small affair. Little was he to know that his funeral attracted the largest turnout of people in a public place in the whole of Italy, and it's still a record today.

The video below is one that I was recently tempted to post up on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. It was going to be a sort of corny homage to America and it's rising from the ashes after that terrible September day, although it still doesn't look like Ground Zero and The Freedom Tower are quite finished.
When I first heard this wonderful choral climax from Rosinni's Guglielmo Tell Finale I was once again blown away. I know that I shouldn't but I have to listen to this on the headphones as loudly as I can so that I'm right there in the middle of the orchestra. To describe it's greatness and sheer power is hard to put into words. It's hardly surprising that Verdi, the master of finality, was heavily influenced by Rosinni. And conducting this truly epic climax is the great Ricardo Muti. And although it starts off quietly the magic soon begins at 2:30 minutes when film footage of The Statue Of Liberty shows up along with the Towers of The World Trade Centre.
We know that Western music is comprised of just twelve notes, yet they can form profound expressions of love, pain, joy, sadness, humour, and in this case sheer power and excellence.
One can only hope that Simon Cowell doesn't get his hands on this spectacular piece of climatic music to use for the X Factor Judges stage entrance. He's already murdered Carl Orff's epic Carmina Burana.

The images were captured by the magazine's photographer Mark Cant who also had a
hand in another interesting editorial in this debut issue featuring Ash Stymest and Jake
Cooper along with Leah Weller. They also feature in an interesting video by Arthur Loveday

Joe & Jane in Je t'aime!

Here's a beauty that seems to have thrown a few readers off balance believing it to be a boy when in fact it is of course English actress Jane Birkin. The images are from the controversial film Je T'aime Moi Non Plus by French director and musician Serge Gainsbourg and made around 1975. In fact Birkin and Gainsbourg became lovers and partners.
The film was rejected for showing in UK cinemas in 1976 although it was eventually passed fully uncut for video in 1993. And I first remember seeing it at the infamous North London Cinema The Scala, that wonderful home of Trash movies, that is just before it closed down.
The movie itself is about love, envy, sex, bisexuality and dare I say it anal sex which is what caused all the fuss.
In one of the opening scenes (Youtube below) Joe Dallesandro and his boyfriend drop into a roadside cafe whereby Joe claps his eyes on what he believes to be a beautiful boy (Jane Birkin) where upon a short and somewhat unsatisfying relationship begins.

In the final video below this post is the scene where Joe and Jane Birkin take to the dance floor while the film's main theme plays out, a tune that even the holier than thou BBC decided to ban the vocal version from the radio airwaves at the time.

MY TOP 100 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

I'ts never easy trying to compile a long list of all your favourite films but if you're a movie lover like me then it does help. Of course it can take a while, and over the last couple of weeks I've been scribbling down film titles on scraps of paper as well as going through my dvd collection to refresh my memory. In fact when my list did reach 100 I found myself still writing more titles down and reaching up to around 130 films so I just had to leave a few out to make it a round one hundred.
And of course right at the top of the pile I've chosen Citizen Kane a film that many film academics have considered as being the greatest film ever made. Made in 1941 by Orson Welles who at the time was a new young novice in Hollywood. And because of this he faced great resentment. So much has been written about him. We've heard that at age 3 he was a musical virtuoso, a theatrical impresario and magician by age 4 as well as being a scholar of Shakespeare. He was also a subject for study by astonished child psychologists.
Before entering Hollywood with as he once said 'The confidence of ignorance' he had great success with his Mercury Theatre Company, but movie making was something new to him and he did learn a few tricks by studying films by the great John Ford.

Citizen Kane brought new effects into cinema. Things like overlapping sound, deep focus photography and great expressionist lighting which Welles first used during his time with The Mercury Theatre's production of Julius Ceaser.
The story of Kane is an investigation into one man's life, Charles Foster Kane. It's thought to be based on the life of media mogul at the time William Randolph Hearst who was naturally hostile to the project, and various efforts were made to stop the release of the film and get the negatives burnt.
Due to the huge success of Citizen Kane Welles was to become a Hollywood outcast and maverick. Perhaps envy or so it's believed. It seems that he spent more of his time running around raising funds for movies than actually making them. And if he was ever bitter of his treatment by Hollywood then it never showed. In fact he made a point throughout his life to never discuss it whether it be in books or on chat shows. But in Las Vegas in 1982 he finally opened up and told all in a spellbinding and well humoured documentary for the BBC Arena series which was recently shown a couple of years ago as part of the BBC's Christmas tv schedule and titled The Orson Welles Story.

It was in this last great interview that he discussed in detail each of his most memorable film projects plus a few forgettable ones as well. He also said that Renoir was his favourite movie director and that James Cagney was his favourite actor citing that there was absolutely nothing fake about him. And when asked what was the best film he made he replied 'Chimes At Midnight' which also happens to be one of my favourites as well. And just over two years after that final interview Welles died in 1985.

And so on to that film list and for the first top thirty films I've credited the film directors. Naturally quite a few of my favourites show up a few times like John Ford, David Lean, Welles and Hitchcock. Incidentally the actor to appear most on this list is Marlon Brando in six of the mentioned films, an actor considered one of the finest of the modern era.

It would be interesting if any visiting readers might find one or two of their favourites hidden away here. Maybe other bloggers might even be tempted to compile their own list, although of course it can be quite time consuming but at the same time informative to others.

He may appear to be a veteran in the world of music
and acting but Thai wonderboy Kao Jirayu reaches the
milestone of 16 years old today. He first came to
prominence with his appearance in the smash hit Thai
movie Love Of Siam in 2006 alongside another teen
heart throb Mario Maurer.

In the video below Kao appears on yet another advertising
shoot for Thai teen magazine Berry who at the time
were celebrating their first year of publication.

I did wonder what became of Russian sensation and contortionist Alexey Goloborodko. He first came to our attention in 2007 when he appeared on Russian tv talent show 'Minute of Fame' (small picture below) at the age of 13. Now aged 16 and looking leaner and taller he's now appearing in the Singapore spectacular circus show 'Voyage de la Vie' (Journey Of Life) which tells the story about a boys metaphoric journey into adulthood whilst meeting some strange and interesting characters along the way.
The show's story is told through energetic dance, athletic circus acts and a few catchy songs.
After a brief break the show resumes next month on November 5th at Singapores first theatrical circus spectacular at Resorts World Sensota.

This month's Thai model magazine HEY! is looking more interesting than usual. They seem to get more daring by the month. This issue features a 39 page portfolio of 23 year old Thai model Sarunyu Charoensuk described as the perfect man.
Of course we've been hearing nothing but bad news coming out of Thailand with all the terrible flooding. And if the statistics are to be believed they say that a third of the country has been affected. And it couldn't have come at a worse time as it's around this period that the tourist season starts followed soon by the National Festival Loi Kratthong taking place soon.

Step aside the droll sounds of the late 1970's. This was the sound that in the late 70's
gave lazy assed middle of the road so called rock a right good kick up the ass,
eventually leading towards the birth of punk and the independent record labels.
Interestingly the BBC has been running weekly archive showings of Top Of The Pops on
BBC4, although they seem to be stuck in 1976 each week. And watching them it's hard
to believe how truly appalling some of music was back then. Just occasionally you
might get the odd gem like Bowie, Roxy or T.Rex nestled in between such oddities like
The Wurzels and Perry Como. You do wonder why they chose to start re-showing the
Top Of The Pops archives in what clearly looks like a barren period for pop music with
punk and Disco just around the corner.

The video below is what I would consider to be the finest punk record ever
recorded and apparently the first punk record to be released in the U.K.
Headphones to the max if you dare!

THE TRANSAMERICA PYRAMID BY BIRON

Now here's one of my absolute favourite architectural icons. It is of course the Transamerica Pyramid, the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco. And this amazing image was captured by San Francisco photographer Biron.
It was only a few weeks ago in an e-mail chat with Biron that I tried to tempt him into a new photographic project where he might take some updated images of this iconic building so that I could do a posting on it as I knew that the building was somewhere in his vicinity.
But I was more than pleased to receive this image. The building seems to be bathed in an early evening golden sunlight. On the left side of the image you can just make out the fadings of a rainbow spreading a golden light over the Bay. They must be right about finding gold at the end of a rainbow.

Designed by architect William Pereira the building was originally the headquarters of the Transamerica Corporation. The facade is covered in crushed quartz which gives it a fresh outer white clean almost new look about it even though the building was completed and opened in 1972.
From looking at this image I can tell that we must be looking at the back end or the rear of the building as other images I've seen show a completely unobstructed view with very low lying surrounding buildings. It's never good when iconic structures get buried by surrounding buildings.

Of course it wont be long before comparisons will be made between this skyskraper and London's new and soon to be tallest building The Shard. Builders on the London structure have now only to get through this coming winter where much of their time will be spent finalizing all the remaining glass panels. I'm hoping soon to go along and take a look at how it's coming along. They expect the building to be completed and finished in May next year. For my full post on The London Shard click below.

Cinematic Wonders

So few movies from the modern era would ever make it into my list of all time favourite movies.
Many true movie lovers might agree that some of the best one's are now behind us. Movies made
by great directors like Hitchcock, David Lean, John Ford, Frank Capra, Francois Truffaut as well
as the 7o's Hollywood brat pack of George Lucas, Coppola and Spielberg, not forgetting Woody
Allen and perhaps early Martin Scorcese. A lot of todays movies seem to set out just to give us
that quick fix. Movies that will probably never earn some sort of legacy.

It seems that Hollywood is still in the grip of CGI and a never ending list of remakes. I was sad to
hear that they've just made a remake of a film called 'Sharkey's Machine' with Mark Wahlberg.
The original version from around 1981 was highly underated and starred Burt Reynolds and it's
strangely enough one of my all time favourite films. I was not that surprised to read on some movie
forums that many movie fans rated it as Burt Reynold's best ever film, even topping 'Deliverance.'
Of course these two actors appeared together in 'Boogie Night's', perhaps Reynold's swansong, I hope not.
One of Hollywoods great faux pas was that movie legend John Wayne never got the deserved Oscar
for his role in 'The Searchers' but rather for a more light hearted affair called 'True Grit.' Such a shame that
Burt wasn't recognized for his role in Sharkey's Machine. It'll be interesting to see if the new version
makes it's mark or not.

One amazing movie I recently watched again was Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore's 'Cinema Paradiso'
a film set in the the late 1940's just after the War and first released in 1988.
The story revolves around a young Fatherless boy called Toto who grows up in a small village
in Sicily where he becomes friends with the local projectionist (Philip Noiret) at the small but
treasured movie theatre, the village's only source of entertainment.

To spoil matters for the local movie goers, the local Priest takes over censoring the more risque
parts of the films and has them cut out altogether forcing them to literally end up on the floor.
In time the young boy Toto grows up into a handsome teenager played by the very handsome
Marco Leonardi (as in the above and below pictures). As well as his love of film he soon becomes
distracted by a young girl. But in time he is advised by his mentor to leave the village and to never
return for fear of becoming a victim of nostalgia.
Thirty years later he does return for the funeral of his former friend and mentor the old projectionist.
On his return he tries to sort out past relationships as well as witnessing the demise of the old movie
theatre which must be knocked down to become a parking lot.

And just before he leaves he is handed a gift that is left for him from his old friend the projectionist.
The gift is an old film reel tin containing all those old censored movie clips which he proceeds to
watch through teary eyes (bottom picture). And along with the powerful and emotional music score
by Ennio Moriconi it has to be the movie's best and certainly most moving moment. It would take a tough
cookie to not be able to react to such a great movie scene like this. It's no surprise that the film won
an Academy Award for Best Foreign film shortly after it's release as well going on to win countless
other awards. It also went on to win The Grand Jury Prize at The Cannes Film Festival.
You can ony imagine how the whole theatre at Cannes on it's premiere showing must have been
a cauldron of emotion as that final scene played out.

Androgyny seems to be getting about on tumblr right now. And this tumblr called Pictoral Culture
has a fine selection of long haired beauties as well as all the usual gender bending Kings and Queens
of tumblr world with all the regular beauties like Andrej Pejic and Stav Strashko.
I had to have a giggle when reading one of the readers comments that he left for the author.
They said, and not surprisingly, "U hav so many pretty boys here! Great taste... I could
masturbate for hours when browsing your archives. Hahaha."

It's not often I take an interest in a model by looking up their details only to find out that
they in fact passed away at a young age. And thats just what happend to Ford model
Randy Johnston in 2008 at the age of 20. At first it wasn't know how it all ended for this
beauty. Eventually a medical examiner confirmed the rumour that he passed away due
"accidental heroin toxicity."

It was only by seeing these amazing images at Pictoral Culture (above post) that brought
him to my attention. They were captured by photographer Alasdair McLellan for the
November 2008 issue of i-d Magazine. The shoot also featured model Lara Stone.

Pretty Boy Dolls

Just love these pretty boy dolls which I first saw at Abs Doll Model blog.
It's certainly worth a look over there as it shows pictures of the dolls around
the owner's homes in various states of undress with a veriety of fashions and
accessories. It came as no surprise to me that they are manufactured in Korea
of all places.
It is a hobby I think I could easily get into and I've heard of keen collectors who
own more than a dozen dolls. One of the most popular models is Ducan (top picture)
who costs a pretty hefty $535 and that doesn't even include the wig and clothing.
Those things plus other accessories are things you have to pay extra for.
About 3 years ago I was in regular contact with a German blogger who owned a
beautiful boy doll called Tadzio, yes the Tadzio from 'Death In Venice' and they often
posted up pictures of the doll around the house or in the garden. I wonder what
happened to them. Although I'm sure Tadzio is being well looked after. Myself and
another blogger Uncle Sidney (could he be my regular Brooklyn visitor) were big
followers of that Tadzio doll.

But as good as the dolls are and very pretty, each with very chiseled torsos, I wonder why
the manufacturers have not managed to invent a way of concealing the slightly unsightly
body joints by covering the models in a flesh coloured skin tight rubber outer skin.
Ducan (above) measures 70cms (28") in height so that gives you some idea of the scale.

The Artist and The Beach House... West Cornwall

Nestled down by the mouth of the Hayle Estuary in West Cornwall just outside St Ives is the spectacular setting of Porthkidney Sands and the Hayle sandbars. And if it all looks slightly familiar then it's because this whole area was the inspiration for West Cornwall artist John Miller who moved to the County in 1958 with his partner Michael Truscott.
His former studio and home The Beach House (Top two pictures above) overlooks The Estuary and sandbars. The house is now a holiday rental property and available to all at quite a hefty price starting at £700 a week in the low season up to a whopping £2,500 a week in the high summer.
John Miller's style of painting inspired many other Cornish artists. The evidence is there to see in the shops and galleries in St Ives. And holiday makers are quite keen to buy up his images whether they be on postcards or canvases. I myself managed to pick up a souvenier mug and plate set a couple of years ago plus a book and a few postcards (picture below).

Home At Last!

HOLIDAYS.

On Saturday we're off for a short break to West Cornwall. I was going to say for a late Summer
break but things are looking a bit Autumnul at the moment. Once again it hasnt been a great
Summer and all the weather media predictions back in Spring were as usual way off mark.
Sales of garden and barbecue equipment must be going down the pan. I dont think we've had
a one or two week heatwave for at least three years. And for anyone that doesn't like it hot or
cold during the Summer months then the U.K must be the perfect climate.
I dont think I'm ready for the Autumn/Winter. Now I know how the Swede's feel at this time
of the year.

So for now I leave you with a whole page of new posts. Hope to be back soon.

When looking over it's archives I'm sometimes not sure what exactly I'm looking at.

BIRON'S ASIAN BEAUTIES

San Francisco photographer Biron really has a good eye for beautiful Asian guys, particularly ripped and muscular one's. In these pictures he recently sent me we can see just a few amazing guys from his local Dore and Folsom Street Fairs where lots of guys get together in some very daring outfits.
Although London might have just a couple of main outdoor gay events including the now popular Naked Bike Ride, San Franciscans do seem lucky in that they regularly seem to put on more Summertime gay events, and you can be sure that photographer Biron will be there as his many galleries testify. And I'm hoping soon to put up more of his work.

The Garden... End Result!

(PICTURE TAKEN LAST THURS EVENING 15th SEPT)

Well it really is hard to convey in a picture just how much work was carried out in order
to get the garden back into shape. With all the cutting back and mowing the unmanagable
lawn there wasn't really any time for me to sit in the garden and enjoy it, well at least not
until the final evening last Friday. In the top 'before' picture you cant even see the central
island. So at least it's starting to get back into shape. But in 2002 when I first took
temporary ownership it was in a worse state. The trees on the left side met up in the
middle of the lawn with the trees on the right side. I guess these things happen when
you leave nature to itself.
Below are a few archive pictures from 2008 when the garden looked it's best. I can only
hope that soon some colour will come back into the lawn.
